Macallan Concept No 3 was a unique collaboration between The Macallan and renowned graphic designer David Carson. The goal was to fuse the artistry of whisky-making with Carson’s vibrant, iconic design style.

Release: Released in mid-2021, Concept No. 3 was a Global Travel Retail exclusive, meaning it was primarily available in airport duty-free stores and Macallan boutiques in international airports.

Cask Selection: Macallan Concept No 3 was crafted from a combination of first-fill, sherry-seasoned American oak casks, with an enhancement from a selection of European oak casks to add depth and richness.

ABV: It is bottled at 40.8% ABV. This specific number was chosen because both the whisky maker, Polly Logan, and David Carson realized that eight is their favorite number.

Tasting Notes

The flavour profile was designed to be bright, fresh, and uplifting, inspired by David Carson’s life as a surfer and his time spent at The Macallan Estate.

Colour: “California Gold,” a pale yellow hue that reflects Carson’s sun-soaked days.

Nose: Sweet fresh pear and apricot, gentle oak spice (cinnamon and ginger), with notes of vanilla and sweet citrus.

Palate: Warming oak spice, apple, pear, and a creamy, rich mouthfeel with a delicate herbal influence.

Finish: A medium, sweet finish with a hint of pastry.

The packaging is a central feature, showcasing David Carson’s distinctive style. The label and presentation box feature his handmade, experimental typography and collage designs. The colours used—including blue for the River Spey and red for The Macallan’s sherry-seasoned oak casks—are inspired by elements found at The Macallan Estate.

As a limited-edition travel retail exclusive, The Macallan Concept No 3 is a highly sought after whisky for collectors and whisky lovers.
