Welsh whisky is one of the most interesting comebacks in the whisky world. Whisky-making in Wales faded away in the 19th century and the country had no working whisky distillery for over a hundred years. It returned in 2004, when Penderyn launched the first commercial Welsh whisky in over a century on St David’s Day. Today Wales has a growing group of distilleries, from the Brecon Beacons to the edge of Snowdonia, each making single malts with a character of its own.
The landscape helps shape the spirit. Wales has soft mountain water, home-grown barley and a mild, damp climate that suits slow, gentle maturation. The whisky is often smooth, fruity and approachable, with notes of orchard fruit, honey and vanilla, and it’s easy to enjoy neat.
Our collection brings together Welsh single malts for drinkers and collectors alike. If you’re curious about the category, you’ll find easy-drinking bottles that suit a first taste of Welsh whisky. If you collect, you’ll find limited editions, single cask bottlings and cask-finished releases that are harder to find. Many are finished in wine, sherry or Madeira casks, which add layers of dried fruit, honey and spice.
Every product page lists the age, strength, cask type and outturn, so you know exactly what you’re buying. Browse the range below to find your next Welsh whisky, whether it’s for your own shelf, a special occasion or a gift for someone who enjoys trying something different.

The Return of Welsh Whisky
Wales has a long history of distilling, but whisky-making there faded away in the 19th century and the country had no whisky distillery for over a hundred years. That changed in 2004. On 1 March, St David’s Day, Penderyn launched the first commercially produced Welsh whisky in over a century, and Wales was back on the whisky map.
A Growing Whisky Nation
Penderyn started with a single distillery in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons and now runs three across Wales. It has been joined by newer producers, including Aber Falls in Abergwyngregyn on the edge of Snowdonia, which released its first single malt in 2021, the first commercial whisky from North Wales in over a century. By the early 2020s, around seven distilleries were making or developing whisky in Wales. Whisky sold as Welsh must be made in Wales, which gives the name real meaning.
What Does Welsh Whisky Taste Like?
There is no single Welsh style, but a few traits come up often. Many Welsh whiskies are light, fruity and smooth, with notes of orchard fruit, honey and vanilla. Cask finishes add variety. Madeira, sherry and port casks bring dried fruit and gentle sweetness, while bourbon casks keep things fresh and creamy. Penderyn also uses a distinctive still, known as a Faraday still, which helps give its spirit a light, clean character.
Single Malt, Cask Finishes and Limited Editions
Our Welsh whisky range covers several styles. Look out for:
- Single malts, made from malted barley at one distillery.
- Cask-finished releases, where the whisky spends time in wine or sherry casks for extra depth.
- Single cask bottlings, drawn from one individual cask, so each is unique.
- Limited and special editions, produced in small batches and often collectible.
How to Enjoy Welsh Whisky
Welsh whisky is easy to enjoy. Sip it neat to appreciate the flavour, or add a few drops of water to soften the spirit and open up the aromas. Its fruity, approachable style also suits people who are newer to single malt. It makes a good gift, especially for anyone with a Welsh connection or a taste for something less well known.
