Description

Springbank Vintage 2001 Batch 1

Historical Context: It was bottled at a time when Springbank was still recovering its inventory after being closed for parts of the late 70s and 80s. This release proved that their “new” spirit (post-reopening) was just as good as the old stuff.

Small Cask Rumors: There has long been an “industry rumor” that some of the components of Batch 1 were aged in smaller-than-normal casks (quarter casks or octaves), which would explain why it tastes much more mature and woody than a typical 8-year-old whisky.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Salted caramel and honey, layered with citrus (lemon zest) and a distinct mineral/ashy peat smoke. Some reviewers note a hint of “warehouse floor” or rubber—the classic “Springbank funk.”

Palate: Thick and oily. It starts with tropical fruits like bananas and coconut, followed by a surge of peppery spice, sea salt, and damp earth.

Finish: Medium to long. The heat of the 55.3% ABV lingers with ginger, dry oak, and a lick of peat smoke.
