Description
Springbank local barley 8 year old is a truly special and highly anticipated bottling within Springbank’s celebrated “Local Barley” series. This series highlights the impact of specific barley varieties grown on local farms, and the 2025 release is particularly interesting due to its use of a heritage grain.
Barley Source: A significant feature of this release is its use of Bere barley, an ancient, six-row heritage grain variety. This Bere barley was grown exclusively at High Ranachan Farm, located close to the distillery on the Kintyre Peninsula. Bere barley is known for its smaller, denser grains and is believed to contribute a unique texture and flavor, often associated with a rich, oily mouthfeel. (It’s also famously used by Bruichladdich for some of their special releases).
Cask Maturation: This whisky was matured for 8 years in an equal split of:
50% ex-Bourbon casks
50% ex-Sherry casks This classic combination allows for a balance of vanilla sweetness from bourbon and richer dried fruit/spice from sherry, complementing the unique barley character.
Tasting Notes:
Springbank local barley 8 year old is noted for its youthful vibrancy combined with a surprising depth and texture, often attributed to the Bere barley.
Nose: Expect a complex and quite “farmy” nose with a distinctive Campbeltown “funk.” Official notes mention cracked black pepper, cigar box, and sage. Reviewers also find notes of “oily rags and old tools in the shed,” earthy qualities, cocoa nibs, and a “gloopy, rich” impression. With a little water, some detect creaminess and savory notes like “cooked guanciale” and black pepper.
Palate: The mouthfeel is a standout feature, frequently described as superbly rich, oily, thick, and malty, often cited as one of the oiliest whiskies experienced by some reviewers. Flavors include shortbread, salted caramel, and a herbal, basil note. Other tasters have found milk chocolate, black pepper, and even “beef fat.” With water, it often becomes creamier and sweeter, with more chocolate and a spicy, hot chili and black pepper finish.
Finish: A long, sweet finish with prominent toffee notes. Reviewers also find a continuation of the spice and a rich, earthy warmth.
This Springbank local barley 8 year old with Bere barley is considered a particularly interesting and texturally rich addition to the series, offering a fascinating insight into the impact of grain on spirit character.
