Description
Rowielia West Midlands Distillery:
West Midlands Distillery’s “Rowielia” isn’t just another bottle on the shelf; it is a confident statement about what English whisky can be. As their second release, this single malt English whisky shows a distillery coming into its own, refining its craft while staying rooted in a powerful sense of place. The name “Rowielia” itself is drawn from the Anglo-Saxon term for Rowley Regis, the very area where it is painstakingly crafted. That choice is deliberate: it links every drop in the glass to centuries of local history and character.
This whisky’s character begins with an unusual and deliberate choice: a blend of two distinct casks—one peated and one un-peated—brought together and bottled at a robust 51.6% ABV. That’s not a random number or a gimmick; it’s a conscious decision to preserve intensity, structure, and depth while still keeping the spirit approachable with a splash of water.
The peated cask contributes a firm backbone of smoke, earth, and gentle maritime notes. It gives the whisky its sense of drama: the smoldering campfire, the charred oak, the lingering warmth that stays with you from the first sip to the finish. On its own, it might dominate, but here it’s expertly restrained.
Balancing this, the un-peated cask provides clarity and lift. You’ll notice brighter layers—honeyed malt, orchard fruits, and delicate vanilla—those subtle aromas and flavors that often get lost in heavier, more aggressively peated whiskies. This cask is what keeps the whisky from becoming one-dimensional; it brings precision and elegance to the glass.
Artisanship is at the heart of this release. Each bottle, and every single part of the outer sleeve, is individually hand-painted by the distillery team, transforming what could have been just another spirit into a genuine piece of collectible art. No two pieces are the same: every stroke of paint reflects the care, time, and pride of a skilled craftsperson, making your bottle unmistakably yours.
This dedication continues in the presentation. The spirit is housed in a distinctive signature “fan box” that does more than simply protect the bottle—it tells a story. Inside, you’ll find a detailed map of the Black Country and Birmingham, grounding the spirit in its home and heritage. Unboxing it becomes an experience in itself: you aren’t just opening a bottle, you’re unfolding a sense of place, history, and character.
