Bunnahabhain 15 Year Old An Cuan Garbh No 1 is a highly anticipated, limited-edition unpeated Islay single malt. It marks the second major chapter of Bunnahabhain’s three-year Westering Home Collection, succeeding the 2025 “Turas Math” (Setting Sail) series.
In Scottish Gaelic, “An Cuan Garbh” translates to “The Rough Sea.” The release is themed around the turbulent central leg of a sailor’s journey home to Islay—symbolizing how the liquid must weather the elements and the wood during its 15 years of maturation at Bunnahabhain Bay.

Description
Bunnahabhain 15 Year Old An Cuan Garbh No 1:
The White Port Twist
Bunnahabhain is legendary for its unpeated, oily, coastal style that traditionally leans heavily on Oloroso sherry maturation. However, Master Blender Julieann Fernandez took a different road for An Cuan Garbh No. 1 by opting for a White Port cask finish.
White port casks are a rare sight in Islay. While red port casks introduce heavy, jammy notes of dark plums and sticky raisins, White Port works beautifully with Bunnahabhain’s unpeated spirit by highlighting bright orchard fruits, floral high notes, and a clean, honeyed nuttiness without overshadowing the distillery’s signature maritime saltiness.
Tasting Profile:
Nose: Elegant and bright. Aromas of honeysuckle, elderflower, and fresh orchard fruits (pears, crisp apples) mix with candied citrus and a cozy, golden honey warmth.
Palate: Rich, viscous, and coating. Sweet stone fruits like peach and apricot take center stage, balanced by candied lemon zest, toasted malt, honeyed almonds, and a prickle of ginger spice.
Finish: Long and warming. It leaves a trailing, slightly dry, and nutty warmth accompanied by lingering sweet candied fruits.
The Enthusiast’s Take
At 51.6% ABV, this dram has a fantastic texture and structure compared to standard 46.3% core bottlings. Because it is unpeated, it allows the delicate, sweet, and summery fruit profile of the White Port to dance perfectly with the natural salinity of the Islay sea air.
With only 6,588 bottles rolling out globally, it is heavily targeted at collectors and fans of Bunnahabhain who want to experience the distillery’s oily coastal DNA through an unconventional wine cask finish.
