? The “Technical” Difference
This isn’t just the standard Ardbeg 10 without water. The production involved a specific experiment:
Experimental Filling Strength: Most distilleries dilute their “new make” spirit to63.5% ABV before putting it into barrels. For this release, Dr. Bill Lumsden filled some experimental American oak ex-bourbon casks withundiluted spirit (straight from the still at a much higher strength).
The Result: Filling at a higher strength changes how the spirit extracts compounds from the wood over 10 years, leading to a denser, more “industrial” flavor profile than the standard 10.
