Stagg Batch 22B

Stagg Batch 22B (formerly known as Stagg Jr. Batch 19) is a standout release from Buffalo Trace that marked a significant shift in how the distillery labels this brand. Released in late 2022/early 2023, it is widely considered one of the “friendlier” high-proof Staggs due to its surprisingly well-integrated heat.

Here is the breakdown of Batch 22B:

Proof: 130.0 (65% ABV)

Age: NAS (No Age Statement), but generally aged between 7 and 9 years.

Mash Bill: Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #1 (Low Rye).

Release Date: Winter 2022.

The Label Change

Starting with Batch 18, Buffalo Trace dropped the “Jr.” from the name, so the bottle simply says Stagg. To help collectors identify releases without a batch number on the front, they introduced the coding system found on the back label.

  • “22” refers to the year of the release (2022).

  • “B” refers to it being the second batch of that year.

Tasting Profile

Stagg Batch 22B is often praised for being “scarily crushable” for 130 proof. It leans heavily into the classic Buffalo Trace “cherry bomb” profile.

Nose: Intense dark cherry, brown sugar, and toasted oak. There’s a distinct “old dusty barn” or leather note that gives it more perceived age than previous batches.

Palate: Rich and syrupy. You’ll find heavy notes of molasses, chocolate-covered cherries, and cola. Unlike some of the hotter batches (like Batch 15 or 16), the ethanol is remarkably well-hidden.

Finish: Extremely long. It leaves a “Kentucky Hug” of baking spices (cinnamon and cloves), dark chocolate, and a slight hint of tobacco.
