The Macallan Edition No 5 is the fifth release in The Macallan’s celebrated Edition Series. This series, which concluded with Edition No. 6, was designed to showcase the skill of the distillery’s whisky makers and the influence of different cask types on the final spirit.

The Whisky

Themed on Natural Colour: Macallan Edition No 5 celebrates the rich and diverse natural colour of The Macallan’s whisky. The color of the whisky is a key part of its character, and it comes entirely from the interaction with the oak casks during maturation.

Collaboration with Pantone: To highlight this theme, The Macallan collaborated with the Pantone Colour Institute to create a unique and complex shade of purple for the packaging and label. This partnership underscores the connection between the art of whisky-making and the science of colour.

Cask Selection: This single malt was crafted from a complex vatting of 525 American oak casks. The selection included a mix of first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and a variety of first and second-fill sherry hogsheads and butts. Each cask was chosen for its specific colour and flavour profile.

Tasting Notes

Nose: The aroma is described as fresh and sweet, with notes of toffee, vanilla, poached pear, and a hint of ginger, nutmeg, and lemon basil.

Palate: On the palate, you’ll find a balance of fresh and sweet flavours. Notes of sweet caramel, poached peaches, and ripe pears are followed by a toffee sweetness and light oak spices like nutmeg and ginger.

Finish: The finish is long and sweet, with lingering notes of sweet oak and spice.
