The Springbank 21 Year Old 2021 Release is an exceptionally sought-after limited-edition single malt from one of Scotland’s most respected independent distilleries. Produced in Campbeltown using Springbank’s famously traditional methods, this distinguished annual release combines remarkable maturity with the distillery’s unmistakable maritime character.

Springbank changes the cask composition of its 21 Year Old from one release to the next, giving each edition a distinct identity. The 2021 bottling is particularly notable for its carefully balanced marriage of 35% ex-sherry casks, 35% ex-port casks and 30% ex-bourbon casks. This unusual combination brings together rich dried fruit, dark berries and warming spice with layers of vanilla, tropical fruit and mature oak. The documented release comprised only 3,600 bottles.

Bottled at 46% ABV, the whisky is presented at natural colour and without chill filtration, preserving its full texture, aromatic complexity and authentic distillery character. Its impressive age is evident throughout, yet the spirit retains the distinctive coastal freshness, gentle smoke and mineral quality for which Springbank is renowned.

Tasting profile

Nose

The nose opens with an inviting combination of dark berries, raisins and rich fruitcake, shaped by the influence of the port and sherry casks. Notes of redcurrant, plum and black cherry develop alongside vanilla, caramelised orchard fruit and polished oak.

With time in the glass, subtler aromas emerge: old leather, walnut, coastal air, gentle tobacco and a delicate trace of Springbank’s characteristic earthy peat smoke.

Palate

Full-bodied and beautifully textured, the palate delivers layers of dried fruit, ripe berries and warming spice. The port casks contribute dark red-fruit sweetness, while the sherry casks bring raisins, dates, roasted nuts and mature wood spice.

The bourbon-cask component provides balance through notes of vanilla, honey, citrus peel and tropical fruit. Beneath the richness lies Springbank’s signature maritime personality, with touches of sea salt, mineral oil, soft smoke and slightly earthy malt.

Finish

The finish is long, warming and complex, carrying lingering notes of dark fruit, salted caramel, toasted nuts and seasoned oak. Gentle smoke, coastal minerality and drying spice remain after the sweeter fruit flavours have faded.
