The Macallan Enigma is the flagship expression of the Quest Collection, a travel-retail-exclusive range introduced in 2018 to celebrate The Macallan’s pursuit of exceptional oak casks from around the world.
Created to showcase the profound influence of European oak and sherry seasoning, Enigma is matured exclusively in carefully selected first-fill European oak casks seasoned with sherry. These casks were sourced from a single cooperage in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, creating a whisky with remarkable depth, richness and consistency of character.
Bottled at 44.9% ABV, Enigma is presented without an age statement. Instead, its composition is guided by maturity, flavour and balance, allowing the whisky makers to select casks that best express its rich, sherry-led profile. Its naturally derived colour, described by The Macallan as Spanish Sunset, reflects the deep interaction between the spirit and its seasoned European oak casks.
The aroma opens with rich dried fruits, including raisins, figs and dates, complemented by warming notes of cinnamon, vanilla and polished oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and indulgent, revealing layers of mature oak, dark fruit, ginger, nutmeg and subtle wood spice. The finish is long, warming and satisfyingly complex, leaving lingering impressions of dried fruit, sweet spice and seasoned oak.

Matured in carefully selected European oak casks seasoned with sherry, this exceptional single malt showcases the remarkable depth, structure and complexity created through The Macallan’s mastery of wood.
Bottled at 44.9% ABV and presented at its natural Spanish Sunset colour, Enigma opens with mature oak before revealing generous layers of raisins, dates, vanilla, sweet pear and warming cinnamon. The palate is full-bodied and luxuriously coating, combining concentrated dried fruit with ginger, sweet cloves, wood spice and toasted oak. An exceptionally long finish leaves lingering impressions of dark chocolate, aromatic spice and refined dry oak.

Tasting Notes:
Nose
The aroma opens with deep, mature oak, gradually revealing layers of dried fruit, including raisins and dates. Sweet vanilla, poached pears and warming cinnamon bring softness and balance, while subtle notes of polished wood and aromatic spice add complexity.
Palate
Rich, full-bodied and coating, the palate is dominated by dried fruits and concentrated wood spices. Stem ginger and cinnamon provide warmth, complemented by sweet cloves, toasted oak and dark fruit. The sherry-seasoned casks give the whisky impressive depth without overwhelming its underlying sweetness.
Finish
