Godawan Series 01 Rich and Rounded PX Sherry Cask
Godawan Series 01 Rich and Rounded PX Sherry Cask isn’t just another Indian single malt; it is a statement of how far Indian whisky has come, and why the spirits world is paying close attention. Produced by Diageo at their Alwar distillery in Rajasthan, this whisky is born in one of the most extreme ageing environments on the planet. The hot, arid desert climate accelerates maturation, concentrates flavours, and creates a character that simply cannot be replicated in the cooler warehouses of Scotland or Ireland. Each year, a significant portion of the whisky evaporates as the “angel’s share”, leaving behind a spirit of remarkable depth, intensity, and individuality.

Description
Godawan Series 01 Rich and Rounded
Godawan Series 01 “Rich and Rounded” PX Sherry Cask is a highly unique Indian single malt whisky that has generated a lot of buzz in the spirits world.
Here is a breakdown of what makes this specific bottle fascinating:
1. The Desert Climate & “Six-Row” Barley
Most traditional single malts (like Scotch) use two-row barley and age in cool, damp climates. Godawan uses locally sourced six-row barley, which thrives in the dry, desert topography of Rajasthan.
Because temperatures in Rajasthan frequently reach up to 100°F (38°C), the maturation process happens at lightning speed. The heat forces the wood of the barrels to expand and contract aggressively, resulting in rapid flavor extraction and a high “Angel’s Share” (the amount of whisky that evaporates from the barrel naturally each year). A whisky aged for just a few years here can taste as deep and complex as a Scotch aged for three times as long.
2. The Cask Twist: Botanical Treatment
The maturation process for Series 01 is where things get wild:
-
It is primarily matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in incredibly sweet Pedro Ximénez (PX) Sherry casks.
-
The Twist: Before the whisky goes in, a subset of the casks are uniquely treated/seasoned with native Indian botanicals—specifically Rasna and Jatamansi (spikenard).
While it is legally classified as a single malt and not a flavored spirit or gin, this clever cask architecture embeds subtle, savory, and herbal undertones straight into the wood before the whisky absorbs it.
Flavor Profile:
-
The Nose: Very expressive. You’ll get rich caramel, dark grapes, sweet honey, and wood polish, mixed with an unexpected earthy, herbal nuance.
-
The Palate: Deeply sweet and texturally thick. It hits you with classic heavy PX sherry notes—juicy figs, prunes, dark chocolate, and espresso—layered with cinnamon spice and a distinct botanical/vegetal funk.
-
The Finish: Medium-to-long, heavily influenced by stewed fruits, honey, and a warming peppery wood spice.
