History & The “Distillery Mothball” Legend

  1. The Discontinuation: Originally launched to massive acclaim, the 15-year-old was discontinued in 2015 due to a shortage of mature stock. Its return in 2018 under Master Blender Rachel Barrie was celebrated across the whisky world.

  2. The “Older Than the Label” Era: Because the distillery was mothballed between 1996 and 2002, bottles of GlenDronach 15 produced shortly after its 2018 relaunch actually contained whisky aged 18 to 22 years rather than the stated 15 years, contributing to its legendary status among collectors.

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Decadent aromas of maraschino cherry, ripe bramble berries, dark chocolate, and orange oil, undertoned by toasted walnut and sweet oak.

  • Palate: Velvet and full-bodied. Heavy notes of fig, blackberry jam, and dark honey mingle with spiced espresso, dark chocolate, and a touch of leather.

  • Finish: Long, warming, and drying. Fades slowly with lingering notes of dark fruit, bitter cocoa, tobacco, and gentle oak tannins.
