As its name suggests, Penultimus marks the second-to-last release in Foursquare’s celebrated Exceptional Cask Selection — a series that has, over three decades, redefined what aged Barbadian rum can achieve. This landmark thirtieth edition brings something entirely new to the collection: for the first time in the series’ history, Spanish Moscatel wine casks feature in the maturation.

A Blend of Distinction

Penultimus is a single blended rum, marrying the richness of copper double-retort pot-still distillate with the clean precision of Foursquare’s continuous twin-column stills — a combination that has become the house’s signature. The rum itself is a careful composition of two components: one matured for a full 15 years in ex-bourbon casks, the other undergoing a dual maturation of 10 years in ex-bourbon casks followed by 5 years finishing in rare ex-Moscatel casks, sourced from the sun-dried muscat grapes of Spain’s fortified wine tradition.

Aged entirely on-site under the tropical conditions of Saint Philip parish on Barbados’s southeastern coast — where the climate accelerates maturation but also claims a significant share to evaporation each year — Penultimus is bottled at 57% ABV, non-chill filtered, with no added sugar, colouring, or flavourings.
